My 7-Step Checklist for Buying a Commercial Floor Scrubber (Without Regretting It Later)

If you're the person in charge of keeping the floors clean across multiple offices, a warehouse, or a retail space, and you've been handed the task of buying a scrubber-dryer or floor sweeper, this is for you.   • Cleaning solution: $25-50 per gallon concentrate. Dilution ratios vary.
  • Squeegee blades: $30-80 per set, depending on machine width. Replace every 6-12 months.
  • Battery replacement (for ride-on or battery walk-behinds): $200-400+ every 2-3 years.
  • Maintenance parts: belts, hoses, gaskets—these fail eventually.

Step 5: Verify Parts Availability (Now and in 3 Years)

  • Weekly: Check squeegee blades for wear. Clean brush head. Inspect battery cables and connections.
  • Monthly: Check belts, hoses, and gaskets. Lubricate moving parts as specified in the manual. Deep clean the machine.

I keep a laminated checklist taped to the storage closet door. The cleaning crew initial it each shift. It sounds micro-managey, but it's saved us a lot of repair costs. The machine that gets used daily in our office? It's been running for 3 years with only a new squeegee blade set and one battery replacement. The machine in our other building, where nobody maintained it? Had to be serviced twice in one year. Same model. Same usage. Different care.

Common Mistakes I've Seen (and Made)

  • Buying too much machine: A ride-on scrubber looks impressive, but if your facility is under 15,000 sq ft, a walk-behind is more practical and easier to maintain.
  • Ignoring the battery type: AGM batteries are maintenance-free but more expensive upfront. Flooded batteries need periodic water refill but are cheaper. Pick one based on whether your staff will actually maintain them.
  • Not checking the warranty fine print: Some warranties exclude wear items. Squeegee blades and pads are never covered.
